The MCAT doesn't test everything — it tests the same things, repeatedly

If you're deep in MCAT prep, you've probably noticed the same topics showing up in every practice test. Amino acids. Enzyme kinetics. The central dogma. Fluid dynamics. There's a reason for that: the MCAT has a finite pool of high-yield concepts, and the AAMC draws from them consistently.

This guide organizes 174 of those concepts across all four MCAT sections, plus CARS and test strategy. Focus your study time here — not on the 20% of content that rarely appears.

Biochemistry (28 high-yield concepts)

Biochemistry feels like the hardest section because the volume is overwhelming. But the MCAT tests biochem predictably.

**The amino acids are non-negotiable.** Know all 20 — their 1-letter and 3-letter codes, which are acidic/basic/nonpolar/polar, and which ones show up in active sites (hint: cysteine, serine, histidine). Every MCAT since 2015 has tested amino acids heavily.

**Metabolism is a story, not a list.** Glycolysis → TCA cycle → Electron Transport Chain. Don't memorize each step in isolation. Learn the flow: glucose enters, gets broken down, NADH and FADH2 carry electrons to the ETC, ATP is produced. Know the rate-limiting enzymes (phosphofructokinase-1 for glycolysis, isocitrate dehydrogenase for TCA) and where each pathway happens (cytoplasm vs mitochondria).

**Enzyme kinetics is about relationships.** Vmax, Km, competitive vs noncompetitive vs uncompetitive inhibition. Draw the Lineweaver-Burk plots until you can do it from memory. The MCAT loves to show you a graph and ask what kind of inhibitor is present.

Biology & Genetics (28 concepts)

**The central dogma is the backbone.** DNA → RNA → protein. Know transcription (RNA polymerase, promoters, TATA box), translation (ribosomes, tRNA, codons), and regulation (operons, transcription factors).

**Genetics follows Mendel.** Dominant/recessive, Punnett squares, Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. The MCAT often combines genetics with probability — "if both parents are carriers, what's the chance their child expresses the trait?" Practice these until they're automatic.

**The immune system is surprisingly high-yield.** Innate vs adaptive. B cells vs T cells. MHC I vs MHC II. Humoral vs cell-mediated. These distinctions show up in both bio and psych/soc sections.

General Chemistry (22 concepts)

**Thermodynamics and equilibrium are connected.** ΔG = ΔH - TΔS. Le Chatelier's principle. Know how temperature, pressure, and concentration shift equilibrium. The MCAT often asks: "If you add more reactant, what happens?" The answer is always "the reaction shifts to consume it" — but they'll dress it up in a novel scenario.

**Acids and bases.** pH, pKa, Henderson-Hasselbalch. Buffers. Titration curves. Know that when pH = pKa, the concentrations of acid and conjugate base are equal. This single fact answers a surprising number of questions.

Organic Chemistry (22 concepts)

**Functional groups first.** Alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids, esters, amines, amides. Know their properties (polarity, hydrogen bonding, acidity) and how to recognize them in a complex molecule.

**Reaction mechanisms.** SN1 vs SN2 (substrate structure, nucleophile strength, leaving group, solvent). E1 vs E2. The MCAT tests these by showing you a reaction and asking about the product, or showing you a product and asking about the mechanism.

**Spectroscopy is pattern recognition.** IR (functional groups), NMR (hydrogen environments), UV-Vis (conjugation). You don't need to interpret complex spectra — just the basics.

Physics (22 concepts)

**Fluids are everywhere.** Bernoulli's equation, continuity equation, Poiseuille's law. The cardiovascular system is a fluid dynamics problem — the MCAT knows this and tests fluids in biological contexts.

**Circuits and optics.** V = IR, series vs parallel, power. For optics: lenses, mirrors, the thin lens equation, magnification. Draw the ray diagrams.

**Waves and sound.** Frequency, wavelength, amplitude, Doppler effect. The Doppler effect appears in both physics and CARS passages about ultrasound or astronomy.

Psychology & Sociology (22 concepts)

**Conditioning is tested constantly.** Classical (Pavlov, Watson) vs operant (Skinner). Positive/negative reinforcement vs positive/negative punishment. Create a 2x2 grid: reinforcement/punishment × positive/negative. Fill it with examples. Know it cold.

**Developmental theories.** Piaget (sensorimotor, preoperational, concrete operational, formal operational). Erikson (8 stages). Kohlberg (moral development). Freud (id, ego, superego — yes, still tested).

**Social psychology.** Conformity (Asch), obedience (Milgram), bystander effect, groupthink, social facilitation vs inhibition. These concepts show up in both psych/soc and CARS passages.

CARS: Critical Analysis and Reasoning (15 concepts)

CARS isn't about knowledge — it's about skill. But there are patterns.

**Passage mapping saves time.** Don't read for detail. Read for structure: what's the main argument, what evidence supports it, what's the author's tone. Jot down 3-5 words per paragraph.

**Wrong answers follow patterns.** Too extreme ("always," "never," "completely"). Outside the scope (true but not discussed). Opposite of the passage. The right answer is usually moderate, supported by the passage, and doesn't require outside knowledge.
