The 12 Highest-Yield SAT Math Concepts (Algebra & Advanced Math)

Algebra and Advanced Math make up more than half of SAT Math. Master these 12 ideas and you've covered the core of the score.

SAT Math is a finite game

The digital SAT's Math section is 44 questions in 70 minutes — two adaptive 35-minute modules with Desmos built in. Algebra and Advanced Math together account for 26 to 30 of the 44 questions (roughly 60%). The concepts below are the highest-leverage ideas in that territory.

The 12 concepts

**1. Linear equations in one variable.** Solve for x cleanly: distribute, combine, isolate. The digital SAT is heavy on "what value of x satisfies" questions with distractingly neat answers.

**2. Linear systems.** Two equations, two unknowns. Know substitution and elimination cold, and recognize when a system has zero or infinite solutions (parallel lines; identical lines) — that's a favorite trap.

**3. Slope and intercept interpretation.** Given a line, tell the story: slope is the rate of change, y-intercept is the starting value. Real-world contexts (cost per item, starting fee) are how the test frames them.

**4. Linear inequalities and word problems.** Translate "at least," "no more than," and "exceeds" into symbols. Flip the inequality when you multiply or divide by a negative — including when the answer choices hide that flip.

**5. Functions and f(x) notation.** Understand f(2) as "plug in 2." The SAT loves composite functions, piecewise definitions, and asking which input produces a given output.

**6. Quadratic factoring.** Master reverse-FOIL for monic quadratics and the difference of squares. Many "simplify the expression" questions are just factoring plus cancellation in disguise.

**7. The quadratic formula and discriminant.** b² − 4ac tells you the number of real solutions before you solve: positive = two, zero = one, negative = none. Questions asking "how many real solutions" are pure discriminant spot-checks.

**8. Exponents and radicals.** Know the exponent rules cold — product, quotient, power, negative, and fractional (a half power is a square root). Radicals are the same rules wearing a different coat.

**9. Rational expressions and equations.** Factor, cancel, and watch for excluded values (division by zero). If a rational equation yields a root that zeroes a denominator, it's not a solution.

**10. Ratios, rates, and percent change.** "Percent increase/decrease = (change ÷ original) × 100." Unit conversions (miles to feet, minutes to hours) show up constantly — track your units and they'll catch most arithmetic slips.

**11. Word-problem translation.** "The sum of two numbers is 20; their difference is 4" becomes an instant system. Practice turning every sentence into symbols — that mapping skill is the actual question half the time.

**12. Systems in context and graphing.** Given a graph, read the intercepts and intersections as answers. Many "which graph" and "which equation" questions are solvable by checking one or two points rather than full algebra.

How Desmos changes your approach

The built-in calculator means arithmetic is not the test. The test is understanding — which equation, which structure, which interpretation. Use Desmos for verification, not as a substitute for knowing the concept: you still need to KNOW that the discriminant decides solution count before you can type anything useful.

A way to practice

Drill these 12 in isolation first (10–15 problems each), then switch to full 22-question modules timed at 35 minutes. The concepts are the input; the module timing is the condition under which you'll actually take the test. If you can solve all 12 concept types reliably under time, you have covered the mathematical core of the section — the remaining questions (data, geometry, trig) build on the same algebra foundations.

Two habits that separate 600s from 700s

  • *Check your answer by re-reading the question. — The digital SAT's Math section is written so that each wrong choice is a plausible reading of the question — the classic "solve for x when the question asked for x + 2" trap. Spend the last 10 seconds of each question confirming you answered what was asked.
  • *Use Desmos as a confirming tool, not a crutch. — If a question gives you a graph, the built-in calculator can plot any function. But you still need to know which function to type, and the discriminant-style questions have no graph to check. Speed comes from recognizing the concept; the calculator only protects you from arithmetic slips.
  • Where the rest of the section lives

    The other roughly 14–18 questions spread across Problem-Solving & Data Analysis (percent change, scatterplots, rates, statistics) and Geometry & Trigonometry (right triangles, circles, volume, and basic trig ratios). All of them lean on the same algebra muscles: units, equations, and function notation. Master the 12 concepts above first — they're the foundation that makes the rest of the section teachable in a fraction of the time.
